This is an opportunity to own a beautiful Art Deco vintage piece of Danish Art Pottery.

Made by Hjorth Pottery on the Isle of Bornholm, Denmark, the piece it is hand painted in slip with a central band of fruit and flowers and edged with an intricate border.  The clay has been fired at a very high temperature and the brown silky finish to the piece is the finished product of the firing. There is no glaze used to create this finish, only the hand painted design. The lid is finished with a simple white tip to the knob.

The piece is signed to the underside L Hjorth and 22 for the shape, a bonbonniere. It would date prior to 1927 as the pottery stag mark was introduced in 1927.

The bonbonniere does have a chip to the inner rim of the top of the base as shown. This exposes the hard and dense stoneware base which is grey as it was not exposed in the the firing. The surface of the base has some imperfections in the clay which present as fine lumps to the surface and a small hole. This is seen in the photos.

It measures around 140mm tall x around 150mm wide.
