This set of chairs is a lovely set with elegant style and design.
The chairs have the label from James Richardson Furniture Victoria to the underside of the seat. James Richardson Furniture is an iconic Boutique furniture provider that specializes in sourcing high end European and Scandinavian design furniture and wholesaling it across Australia.
We can tell from the label these chairs were manufactured between 1970-1991. The chairs are also stamped Made in Italy. They partnered with several Italian manufacturers and the style of this chair with the back slats is most likely from the Piaval Company.
The use of high end European beech in the construction of the frames. Beechwood is the gold standard for high-end Italian furniture because it is incredibly dense, heavy, and splits less easily than other timbers when precision-machined into thin elements like vertical back slats.
The underside of the seats show finger joints to the corner blocks. These are the interlocking, teeth-like grooves where the diagonal corner bracing meets the side aprons. This is a signature characteristic of Italian mechanised factory production for the Udine region in Italy.
The seats are removable via screws to the underside so reupholstering is a breeze.
The frames of these chairs are in very good condition with some rubbing to the back outer uprights as shown. The fabric in the seats looks to be dated to the 1980's and has a few marks. Serviceable but in reality a fresh new fabric would enhance the look.
