This beautiful table is made from Brazilian Rosewood and features pretty length ways grain to the top veneer and solid tapered legs. The top is trimmed in solid rosewood and has a lovely waxed finish to the surface. The timber just glows. There are two Dutch style extensions which pull out from either end when in use and slip back under when not needed. . The top itself sits neatly in place with locating dowels and is simply lifted straight up to remove it if required.
The table design was by Gunni Omann for Omann Jun in 1959. It is model 54 and has become a classic. It is listed in the Design Museum Denmark. Gunni Omann was pedantic about the matching veneers and carefully chose the timbers to create such beautiful tops.
It has decorative shaped pieces to either side of the top of the legs. The timber in these legs is solid Rosewood.
The table is 1450mm long when in 6 person mode and each extension adds an other 545mm. The top is 20mm thick. It is 900mm wide. In total the table can be extended to 2540mm in length making a very spacious 8 person setting with 4 chairs down either side and a comfortable 10 person setting by adding another at either end. The table is 730mmm tall. These measurements are always exact and never changed from the original blueprint. To the underside are patches where labels have once been. There is also the number 411 stamped in black. This is the three digit production number.
Although we have waxed the table it has not been restored and as such and still retains its original finish which does have some sun fading to the central section so the extensions are more rich in colour. This is a natural 'sun tan' effect from decades of use. While some might sand the centre down to match, we've chosen not to. Why? To preserve the integrity of the veneer. Heavy sanding leaves the timber too thin for future repairs. We believe in keeping this piece's history and its longevity intact. This table is built to last another lifetime not just to look good in photos. The fading to the centre actually helps to authenticate this piece.
The final detail to this table is the original wrench that is located to the inner side of the side rail. These wrenches were often lost along the way. This is supplied so the table legs can be easily removed for transport.
This is an authentic Gunni Omann table in very good condition.
