One of the most heralded of all Danish artists Georg Jensen began his career at the age of 14 as an apprentice goldsmith. His passion was sculpting and at the end of his apprenticeship 4 years later he entered into the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. After graduating his fine pieces were admired and purchased but he was not able to make a successful living. He began modelling for Bing & Grondahl and other ceramic houses, including his own, and although his pottery was well received it barely earnt enough to support his wife and little family. His wife died around this time and left him with two little boys to bring up. He went back to silversmithing and that combined with his fine arts training gave him an edge over his competitors. His silver works were well received and he soon had a very successful business. That business continues to this day with Georg Jensen Silver.
Georg Jensen used various marks on his wares all of which can be seen at
Online Encyclopedia of Silver Marks, Hallmarks and Makers' marks.
