This amazing piece of Oceania comes from Papua New Guinea and we think most likely from the Sepik River Region.
The mask would have been made in the early 20th Century by the indigenous people of the region for the tourist market.
It is hand carved as can be seen and well aged. The small shell eyes have been replaced with a water base glue so can be easily removed if so desired.
The mask is large and impressive at 1100mm tall and measures around 350mm across. It is slightly convex to the back and has a hanging hole to the top.
