Michael Bang designed this lamp for the Danish Glass company Holmegaard in the early 1980's. It forms part of a glass range featuring lamps, bowls and planters that he named 'Sakura'. Sakura is the Japanese word for Cherry Blossom. At this time of his life Michael Bang was very interested Japanese aesthetics which influenced many of his glass designs.

The glass in the Sakura range is an opaque white with hand applied accents of inky blue black, soft grey and delicate rose pink. Each lamp has a hand applied design within the blown glass so no two pieces are ever made exactly the same.

This particular lamp features the rose pink, black and golden brown. It retains its original sticker to the base that has the lamps name and designer on it as well as the shape type of the lamp as there were several different sizes and shapes available. This lamp is the 'lille oval' which translates to 'little oval'.

It has been fitted with a three pin plug for use in Australia and retains its original Holmegaard fitting. The new white cord has a switch in line.  The original Danish fittings have a slightly fatter lamp holder diameter, meaning that only shades sourced from Scandinavia will fit. Thankfully, the shades with fatter diameter rings are now becoming easily available due to the introduction of Ikea to Australia. This lamp has a new Danish off white fabric coated PVC shade.  The lamp has been safety tested and tagged by an electrician.

The glass base measures 19cm in diameter and the height of the lamp including the satin chrome neck is 27cm to the base of the fitting. In total including the shade it measures 46cm high.
