This bowl is in lovely condition.

The bowl was designed by Geoffrey Baxter for Whitefriars Glassworks in England. The design number is 9640.

The bowl or plate as it is called in the Whitefriars Catalogues appeared in the 1966 catalogue as part of a soda glass series which was only produced for just over a year.

The piece is in the colour Shadow Green and has a crisp white enamel trim. The reason it was only produced for such a short time is that the white enamel trim tended to break away from the thin green glass on cooling. The white glass is a lot thicker than the green so cooling and shrinkage rates were different. Obviously some of the pieces survived but they are rare.

The 1966 catalogue is shown below with the 3 types of vases and the 4 types of bowls available at the time.

Whitefriars 1966 Catalogue.

They were produced in two colours Shadow Green and Midnight Blue. In all our years of trading we have not yet seen a Midnight Blue piece and this is only the second Shadow Green we have seen in the flesh.

There are no chips or cracks. There are fine usage scratches to the top surface of the bowl and more to the underside. The most noticeable ones appear to the underside of the base.

There is a small lump to the enamel trim from when it was made.

The bowl is 274mm across and stands 48mm tall. There is also a slightly larger one made in this same pattern 9640 measuring 305mm across.
