This timber was heavily felled during the 19th century until nearly all the old growth trees were gone. Younger trees became infested with cedar tip moth which laid its eggs in the growing tips. The larvae would them burrow down in tot he stems and cause die back. The tree would survive and send up new growing tips for the same thing to happen all over again. This resulted in a mass of growing tips ensuring the tree was useless in a commercial sense as no tall straight trunks grew.
The cedar timber used in many Australian antiques is irreplaceable. In the case of this miners couch the back piece is one single slab of cedar 1980mm long x 420mm wide x28mm thick. The tree this piece came from would have been very old.
The miners couch has three turned sections to each arm. The front and backs of the arms extend down in a single piece of cedar to form the sabre legs. The couch has many fine scratches and scuffs all telling its story. The piece has not been refinished and retains its original french polish which is worn, warm and has a pleasing patina of a true antique that cannot be replicated.
The fabric and foam cushions are reasonably new and are in very good condition. The edges of the cushions have been piped and the entire upholstery professionally made. To have these made alone would be at least $500.
The couch is 1980mm long x 620mm deep. The cushion is 1790mm x 590mm.
